When originally planning my final newsletter of the year, I didn’t anticipate the then and the now. The then was a light-hearted reflection on the year that was, and a sincere thanks to our artists, audiences, partners and team for a truly stellar year. The now is the heaviness that Australia is experiencing following the devastating terrorist mass shooting at Bondi beach, Sydney. These are words I never imagined having to say or write.
December is often time for reflection. It’s also often a time of fatigue, stress and -hopefully- joy for the prospect of some moments with loved ones and, for the lucky ones – the security of housing, food and safety.
As Australians, and indeed the world, react to the horrific events of Sunday, hope and kindness have been abundant. The Australian Red Cross has seen the highest number of blood donations on record, following urgent requests for blood donors around the country. Donations to the families of victims are breaking records. People are attending vigils and reaching out to extend support through gestures that will be long-remembered and appreciated by those directly affected, and by our wider community.
Above all, through the horror of the now, a light has been shone on the antisemitic overtones that have increasingly affected our Jewish community Australia.
So, while the now of December is far heavier than anticipated, hope remains that events of this week will be a catalyst for change – for kindness, for understanding and for hope.
If indeed, you need an escape from news and media, our team has put together a list of what we’ll be reading, watching and listening to over our brief break. From podcasts and epic fantasy to comfort TV and new releases, perhaps there might be something that offers a moment of respite for you too.
May the coming weeks bring moments of rest, connection and car. Wishing you and yours kindness, hope and light during Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year and every celebration you embrace.
